NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called for a significant escalation in military preparedness during a speech at Chatham House in London. The alliance's leader warned that current defenses are insufficient, emphasizing that threats will persist even after the Ukraine war ends. "We must have more forces and capabilities to implement our defense plans in full," Rutte stated, pushing members to dramatically increase their commitments.

The proposed spending targets—3.5% of GDP on defense and an additional 1.5% on cybersecurity and border control by 2032—mirror former U.S. President Donald Trump's demands for NATO allies to contribute more. This alignment suggests a strategic shift within the alliance as it prepares for a critical summit vote on defense budgets.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer faces mounting pressure to revise his defense spending timeline after meeting with Rutte. While Starmer previously pledged to reach 2.5% by 2027 and 3% by 2034, the new 5% benchmark set by both TRUMP and Rutte may force quicker action.
